Whether you need a private car to the start line, an airport shuttle alternative, or a reliable chauffeur-driven limo service for race weekend, getting around the Gold Coast on 4–5 July 2026 is all about planning ahead. The 46th ASICS Gold Coast Marathon brings tens of thousands of runners, families and spectators into Southport — and with road closures, packed trams and pre-dawn start times, your transport can make or break the morning.
This guide covers every option, from driving yourself to door-to-door executive transfers, so you can focus on the run (or the post-race celebrations) instead of the logistics.
· When: Saturday 4 July (Half Marathon, 10km, 5km and more) and Sunday 5 July 2026 (the full Marathon), with the marathon gun firing at 6:15am. · Where: The Race Precinct is at Broadwater Parklands, Marine Parade, Southport — both the start and finish line. · Free public transport is included for registered participants on their race day. It’s a genuine option — but it won’t suit everyone (more below). · 2026 rail alert: Major track closures hit the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines from 27 June–19 July, so trains from Brisbane and Brisbane Airport are replaced by buses across race weekend — a real factor for interstate runners. · Best for door-to-door, groups and early starts: A private chauffeur or limo service gets you from your hotel to Southport without queues, surge pricing or a 5am scramble. · Flying in? Most visitors land at Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta); Brisbane Airport is the larger interstate gateway around 95km north. · Pay after the ride: With Cars on Demand, if the wheels don’t roll, the money doesn’t leave your account.
The ASICS Gold Coast Marathon is Australia’s flattest, fastest and most popular marathon, with around 60% of participants achieving a personal best each year. The 2026 event is the 46th running and is expected to draw more than 40,000 participants across eight races.
Here’s what marathon weekend looks like on the ground:
· Saturday 4 July — China Airlines Half Marathon (6:15am), plus the Southern Cross University 10km, Gold Coast Airport 5km, wheelchair events and the Junior Dash. · Sunday 5 July — Wheelchair Marathon followed by the flagship ASICS Gold Coast Marathon (6:15am). · The course — An out-and-back route starting at Southport, heading south past Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and Mermaid Beach to the Miami turnaround, then north through Labrador and Biggera Waters to Runaway Bay, before finishing back at the Broadwater Parklands. · Race Expo & bib collection — Held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach. You’ll need to collect your race number here before race day, so factor in a trip across town.
With races starting before sunrise and roads closing across Southport, Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast Highway, where you stay and how you travel matters more than usual.
There’s no single “best” way to reach the start line — it depends on where you’re staying, how early you need to be there, and whether you’re travelling solo or with a crew. Here’s an honest look at each option.
Driving yourself gives you flexibility, but parking near the Broadwater Parklands fills quickly and many surrounding streets fall inside the closure zone. If you drive, arrive very early and use Ferry Road and Scarborough Street to reach Southport parking. The risk: a stressful, last-minute hunt for a spot when you should be warming up.
Registered runners travel free on race day by showing their bib to transit staff, and under normal conditions the network is a solid, low-cost option for runners staying near a G:link tram stop in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach.
For the 2026 marathon weekend, though, there’s a significant catch. Queensland’s Cross River Rail and faster-rail works have scheduled major track closures on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines from 27 June to 19 July 2026 — which covers race weekend. During this period, buses replace trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road, the entire stretch that connects Brisbane and Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast.
In practice, anyone travelling from Brisbane or Brisbane Airport is forced off the train and onto a rail-replacement bus before they can reach Helensvale to pick up the G:link tram into Southport. The honest trade-off: a multi-vehicle, pre-dawn transit journey with trackwork delays. If you have checked luggage, a family in tow, or an early starting corral, that’s a lot to gamble on before 42.195km.
Taxis and rideshare can work, but major events bring surge pricing, long waits and driver cancellations, especially at pre-dawn pickups and around closed roads. You may also be dropped at the edge of the closure zone and left to walk the rest.
A private car or chauffeur-driven transfer is the most reliable option for door-to-door travel. You’re collected from your hotel at the time you choose, driven as close to the precinct as the closures allow, and there’s no surge, no queue and no parking hunt. It’s the standout choice for early starts, groups carrying gear, spectators planning to move between vantage points, and anyone who simply doesn’t want race-morning stress.
At Cars on Demand, we’ve spent more than 35 years moving people around Australia’s biggest events — and the Gold Coast Marathon is one we know well. Here’s how a private transfer takes the stress out of race weekend:
· Hotel-to-start-line runs — Be collected at the exact time you need, with a professional chauffeur who knows the closures and the fastest clear route into Southport. · Spectator transfers — Want to cheer from Mermaid Beach, then catch your runner again at Runaway Bay? We can move your cheer squad between vantage points while everyone else is stuck in traffic. · Group & family options — Running crews, families and supporters travel together in a comfortable Mercedes V-Class or larger vehicle, with room for gear, recovery bags and prams. · Post-race recovery rides — Tired legs after 42.195km? We’ll have you back at your hotel without a long walk to a tram stop.
For groups of three or more, a dedicated private vehicle is often cheaper per person than separate rideshares — and far more comfortable.
Choose the vehicle that fits your weekend, from a sleek executive sedan for couples to a spacious vehicle from our fleet for running crews and families. Whatever you book, you get a professional, fully verified chauffeur — not an anonymous driver from an aggregator app.
Flying in for the race? You’ll want a seamless connection from the terminal to your accommodation — no queues, no surge, no working out which tram to catch with a suitcase.
· Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta, OOL) is the closest gateway, roughly 30km south of Southport (about 30–40 minutes). Our Gold Coast Airport transfers include meet-and-greet inside the terminal and luggage assistance. · Brisbane Airport (BNE) is the major interstate and international gateway, sitting roughly 95km north of the Gold Coast (60–90 minutes by road). Crucially, the 27 June–19 July 2026 track closures mean the train line down to the Gold Coast is replaced by buses across this stretch — so navigating public transport from BNE with heavy luggage, foam rollers and race gear can take well over two hours of trains, transfers and rail-replacement buses. Our Brisbane Airport transfers bypass the entire rail-disruption network: your chauffeur meets you inside the terminal, manages your bags, and drives you directly down the M1 to your hotel door.
Every airport transfer uses RideMinder, our live flight-tracking and dispatch platform, so if your flight is early or delayed, your chauffeur adjusts automatically and is there when you land. You can read more about the technology behind our airport transfers and find your airport meeting point before you fly.
Wherever you’re based for the marathon, we cover door-to-door pickups across the Gold Coast and beyond:
· Surfers Paradise — central hotels, minutes from the tram and a short transfer to Southport. · Broadbeach — close to the Expo at the Convention Centre. · Southport — right by the Race Precinct. · Main Beach & The Spit — including the Sheraton Mirage and Sea World Resort. · Mermaid Beach & Miami — near the southern turnaround and spectator zones. · Burleigh Heads, Robina & Coolangatta — for runners staying further south or near Gold Coast Airport. · Runaway Bay & Paradise Point — close to the northern turnaround. · Brisbane — for interstate visitors arriving via Brisbane Airport.
A little local knowledge goes a long way on marathon morning:
· Expect heavy congestion across Southport and surrounding suburbs, with the Gold Coast Highway between Southport and Mermaid Beach affected from around 7am to 12pm on Sunday 5 July. · Use western roads such as Benowa and Currumburra Roads to travel north–south, and Ferry Road and Scarborough Street to reach Southport parking. · Use Olsen Avenue and Oxley Drive to enter or exit Labrador, Runaway Bay and Paradise Point. · Add extra travel time to everything — and where possible, leave the driving to a chauffeur who maps the route around the closures for you.
If you’re planning other Gold Coast outings while you’re here, our Magic Millions transport guide covers another big event weekend on the coast.
· Pay after the ride — If the wheels don’t roll, the money doesn’t leave your account. No risky advance payments to overseas aggregators. · Fully verified, professional chauffeurs — Every driver is biometrically verified before they ever pick up a passenger, so you know exactly who’s behind the wheel. · Fixed, upfront pricing — No surge, no race-weekend price hikes. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. · 35 years of experience — A trusted local operator, not an overseas call centre or driver-aggregation app. Here’s why corporate travellers and CEOs choose Cars on Demand. · Built for groups and EAs — Travelling with a team or booking on behalf of others? For solo runners staying near a tram stop, the free G:link service on race day works well. For early starts, groups carrying gear, spectators, or anyone who wants a stress-free door-to-door ride, a private chauffeur is the most reliable option.
Yes — registered runners can travel free on public transport on their race day by showing their bib. It’s a great option, but expect heavy crowds at pre-dawn start times.
Our chauffeurs know the closure zones and will collect you from your hotel and drop you as close to the Race Precinct as the closures allow, then map the clearest route around the affected roads.
Absolutely. We offer Mercedes V-Class and larger vehicles for running crews, families and cheer squads — often cheaper per person than separate rideshares, with room for gear and recovery bags.
Not as normal. From 27 June to 19 July 2026, major track closures mean buses replace trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road, covering the Brisbane–Gold Coast line over race weekend. Interstate runners flying into Brisbane Airport face a multi-leg trip of trains, transfers and rail-replacement buses — which is why many opt for a direct private transfer instead.
Yes. Brisbane Airport is around 95km north of the Gold Coast, and our private transfers get you to your coast accommodation in one direct, comfortable trip with live flight tracking.
