Quick answer: Jonah's Whale Beach is at 69 Bynya Road, Whale Beach, on Sydney's Northern Beaches, roughly an hour's drive north of the Sydney CBD. You can drive and park on site, take a bus (usually changing at Mona Vale), arrive by seaplane on Pittwater, or book a private chauffeur. For a long lunch, a degustation dinner or a wedding, a pre-booked chauffeur or limo service is the easiest way to get to Jonah's and home again, because nobody has to drive back down Barrenjoey Road after enjoying the wine list.
Perched on the cliffs between the Pacific Ocean and Pittwater, Jonah's has been a Sydney institution since it opened as a roadhouse in 1929. Today it is an award-winning restaurant, a boutique hotel with ocean-view rooms and a popular wedding venue on the Northern Beaches. It is also at the far end of a long peninsula, so the trip there needs a little planning. This guide covers every way of getting to and from Jonah's, with directions, parking, public transport, seaplanes and how to book reliable Northern Beaches chauffeur transfers.

Jonah's is about 50 minutes to an hour by road from the Sydney CBD. Destination NSW puts it at around 50 minutes from the city, and Jonah's own directions allow about an hour. From Sydney Airport, allow roughly 70 to 90 minutes in light traffic. Weekday peak hours, summer beach traffic on Barrenjoey Road and Spit Bridge openings can all add time.
| Starting point | Typical travel time to Jonah's | Main route |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney CBD | 50 to 60 minutes (light traffic) | Spit Bridge, Pittwater Road, Barrenjoey Road |
| Sydney Airport (T1, T2, T3) | 70 to 90 minutes (light traffic) | Harbour crossing, Spit Bridge, Pittwater Road |
| North Shore and Western Sydney | Varies by suburb | A3, Mona Vale Road, Barrenjoey Road |
| Rose Bay by seaplane | About 20 minutes flying, plus the wharf transfer | Over the harbour and up the coast to Pittwater |
Times are a general guide only. When you book a chauffeur, your pickup time is planned around your reservation time and the traffic you can expect on the day.
Here is how the main transport options to Jonah's Whale Beach compare for a lunch, dinner or overnight stay.
| Option | Getting there | Getting home | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive and park | About an hour from the city, onsite parking | Someone has to stay under the limit for the drive back | Hotel guests staying overnight, or lunches without wine |
| Bus | Usually a change at Mona Vale, then an uphill walk from Barrenjoey Road | Late-night services thin out after dinner | Solo daytime visitors with time to spare |
| Rideshare or taxi | Usually possible from the city | Cars can be harder to find at the top of the peninsula late at night | Flexible daytime trips |
| Seaplane | Scenic flight from Rose Bay to Pittwater, then a short transfer | Depends on your package; some dinner packages are one way | Special occasions and visitors who want the view |
| Cars on Demand chauffeur RECOMMENDED | Door to door from your home, hotel, office or the airport | Return pickup booked in advance, or hourly hire while you dine | Long lunches, dinners, weddings, corporate events and groups |
From the city, head north over the Spit Bridge and follow the signs to Palm Beach along Pittwater Road, which becomes Barrenjoey Road at Mona Vale. Continue through Newport and Avalon, then about three kilometres after Avalon turn right into Surf Road at the Jonah's sign and take the first left into Bynya Road. Jonah's is at number 69, at the top of the hill. From the North Shore or Western Sydney, take the A3 onto Mona Vale Road, turn left at the end onto Barrenjoey Road and follow the same route through Newport and Avalon.
Jonah's has onsite parking at the front of the building and up the driveway, including a disabled parking space, and there is street parking nearby. If you are unsure where to go, pull into the turning circle at the front and reception will help. Full directions are on the Jonah's Getting Here page.
The catch is the drive home. Jonah's wine list has collected national and international awards, and the restaurant itself suggests leaving the car behind so you can add matching wines to your meal. If you are driving, one person in your group misses out.
There is no train line on the Northern Beaches. For most trips, the public transport route is a bus from the city to Mona Vale, then a connecting service towards Palm Beach, getting off near Surf Road and walking up the hill to Bynya Road. It is workable for a daytime visit, but it is a long trip with a steep final walk, and services thin out late at night after dinner. Check current timetables on the Transport for NSW Trip Planner before you travel.
Getting a taxi or rideshare to Jonah's from the city is usually straightforward. Getting one home is less predictable. Whale Beach sits near the northern tip of the peninsula, so at 10:30pm on a Saturday there may be few cars nearby, and app pricing can change with demand. Rideshare cars also cannot use bus lanes, so they sit in the same traffic as everyone else on Pittwater Road.
For a special occasion, Sydney Seaplanes flies from its terminal at Rose Bay, over Sydney Harbour and up the Northern Beaches coastline, landing on Pittwater. Jonah's then arranges the short transfer from the wharf to the restaurant. Jonah's asks guests to book the flight directly with Sydney Seaplanes and provide the booking reference when reserving a table or room, so the wharf transfer can be organised. Some seaplane dining packages are one-way flights only, which is where a chauffeur comes in.
A pre-booked chauffeur turns the hour-long drive into part of the experience instead of a job someone has to do. It is the simplest way to get to Jonah's and back for a long lunch, a degustation dinner, a proposal or a weekend stay.

According to the NSW Government guide to bus and transit lanes, bus lanes can be used by hire cars with HC number plates, and HC-plated hire cars can use transit lanes regardless of how many people are on board. Lanes signposted Bus Only remain off limits. Pittwater Road is one of the main bus corridors on the Northern Beaches, so lane access can make a real difference on a Friday evening. Read more in our guide to the best Northern Beaches airport transfer.
A memorable way to do Jonah's is to combine the two: fly up for the view and be driven home in comfort, or the reverse.
Seaplane schedules depend on weather and daylight, so it is worth having a road option in your plans. A pre-booked chauffeur covers you either way.
Flying in from interstate or overseas for a stay at Jonah's? Allow roughly 70 to 90 minutes by road from Sydney Airport to Whale Beach in light traffic. Our Sydney Airport transfers include live flight tracking through our RideMinder airport transfer technology, powered by Cirium aviation data, so your pickup adjusts if your flight lands early or late. Your chauffeur meets you inside the terminal; check our airport meeting points before you land.

Prefer the full limo experience? Our Sydney Airport limo service covers the run to Whale Beach and Palm Beach. Flying from Western Sydney International instead? Book our Western Sydney Airport transfers; it is a long cross-city drive, and journeys over 90km receive 10% off.
Planning around the holidays? Jonah's hotel says its peak season runs from 20 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, when the hotel opens seven days but the restaurant still only serves lunch and dinner Thursday to Sunday. Barrenjoey Road is busy over summer too, so book your transfers early.
If you are staying the night, book two separate transfers: one in for check-in and one out on departure day. Jonah's Ocean Retreat rooms each have a private balcony looking over Whale Beach, so most guests want to arrive with time to enjoy the afternoon rather than rushing in from the city.
Room details and packages are on the Jonah's accommodation page.
Jonah's hosts weddings, conferences, product launches and milestone celebrations, from private spaces to exclusive venue hire. Because it is a destination venue, transport is usually the biggest logistics question for couples and event organisers.

According to Jonah's own listing on Easy Weddings, the venue offers intimate weddings for up to 48 guests and exclusive-use weddings for up to 122 guests, with ceremonies held on the clifftop lawn overlooking the ocean. Jonah's also lists its Terrace Wedding Package as a lunchtime wedding running from 11am to 5pm, which means guest transport needs to be planned for a late-morning arrival and an early-evening return. Confirm current packages with Jonah's wedding team before you lock in timings.
As a planning guide, if every guest needs a ride from the same hotel or meeting point:
| Guests needing transport | Mercedes Sprinter minibuses (up to 11 each) | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 11 | 1 | Two V-Class people movers (7 each) |
| Up to 22 | 2 | One minibus plus two people movers |
| Up to 48 | 5 | Staggered runs with fewer vehicles, if timing allows |
| Up to 122 | 12 | Staggered runs from several hotels, coordinated on one booking |
Most weddings only need transport for some guests, so tell us where people are staying and we will suggest the most efficient mix of vehicles and pickup times.
Read why couples are skipping the traditional package in our guide to wedding limo hire prices. For conferences, executive retreats and client lunches, Executive Assistants can book multiple cars on one account with one tax invoice, and our event transfers team can coordinate staggered pickups across Sydney.
| Your group | Recommended vehicle | Why it works |

| Friends or family (5 to 7 guests) | Mercedes V-Class people mover | Everyone arrives and leaves together, at one fixed price |

From the CBD, Double Bay, Bondi or Rose Bay, the route runs over the Harbour and up through the Spit Bridge. Allow an hour or more in traffic, especially on Friday evenings.
From Chatswood, Mosman, Gordon or St Ives, your chauffeur will choose between the Spit and Mona Vale Road depending on traffic on the day.
Locals heading up the peninsula for lunch or dinner still face the drive home afterwards. A short chauffeur run from Manly, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Newport or Avalon means nobody has to be the designated driver. See our Northern Beaches transfers page for local service details.
From Parramatta, Castle Hill or Norwest, the trip usually heads across to the A3 and Mona Vale Road. It is a long run, so a set return time matters even more after a late dinner.
